Goal Setting

“One way to keep momentum going is to have constantly greater goals.” —Michael Korda

What do you want to achieve with your fitness in the new year?  Answer that question and you’ve already set yourself goals for 2020.  It really is that easy.

Setting goals enables you to have a long-term vision and with that comes motivation in the shorter term.  Goals that motivate you will get you out of bed on those cold winter mornings so you can hit the studio before work and goals will keep you working out even when you would prefer to be sitting in front of the air con on a 32 degree afternoon.  Knowing what you want to achieve helps you map out the work you need to do to reach a fitness goal or goals you have set for yourself.  Without goals, it’s like travelling to a new place without a map – you will get lost, it will take a longer time and you may not ever reach your destination.

Goals help you overcome the master of failure – procrastination.  When you set goals for yourself, you make yourself accountable to get the task done, to reach the finish line.  Procrastination however, loves long term goals.  I know, this seems like I just contradicted myself but what you need to know is that longer term goals – 3 months or more – need to be broken down into shorter term milestones.  Celebrate the short-term wins and keep yourself motivated and avoid the procrastination monster as you travel towards your bigger, longer term aims.

Want to live life to its fullest?  Well set yourself some goals because this will ensure you are getting the most out of life.  If your bucket list dream is to climb Kilimanjaro, then set that goal and get your plan in place to make it happen.  Knowing the endgame will make sure you focus on saving the money for the trip and getting your fitness to a place that will allow you to climb that mountain!  Life is short, only you can make the most out of it for yourself!

At In House Studio Fitness, I ask all of my clients what their goals are for the coming year so have a think about what you want to achieve.  For some it is weight loss, improved strength or better cardio fitness so they can play with the kids or give that 10km run a go.  For others its more about mental health and they set themselves the goal of keeping stress levels in check by going to training a minimum number of times a week to support this aim.  Sometimes it is a focus on rehabilitation from an injury – training regularly, building strength, and getting back to health after an injury or surgery.  Or it can be as simple as wanting to be an integral part of a like minded community such as the In House fitness peeps - a group that gets you out of the house and looking after your own health and wellbeing.  A fitness goal isn’t always about bigger muscles or reduced numbers on the scale!

It doesn’t matter what your goals are for 2020, they only need to be important to you.  But I am going to ask you what they are and I am here to support, motivate and assist you to reach them while still having fun at training!

Bring on 2020!
